EDIT (April 1st 2006): I hope to be working on this more over the summer. I plan to take a break from University for a year, and get a part-time job. I need some spare money, but not so much to warrant full-time employment, so that I can get a new hosting account set up. I also plan on doing other things non-Sonic related too, as the course I'm doing is being crafted into a rather nice game-development course biggrin.gif

--------------------

The current build of Armageddon Game is 2.0.9, and has been for some time. Hill Top Act 1 layout is partially done, though not included in 2.0.9.

Level Maps

A simple level hack (so far), with a couple of graphical changes (which I'm sure have been done before at some point or another; I just did them to see if I could).

I started work on this a couple of years or so ago, and it was even hosted on SSRG for a while. I have since bought a web hosting package so that it may have a new home smile.gif

Changes made (compared to a clean Sonic 2 ROM):
- New zone names
- EHZ, CPZ, ARZ level layouts completely altered
- CNZ act 1 layout partially altered
- no other levels in the ROM at the current time
- no Tails (which is good)
- no two-player mode (obviously)
- no Special Stages (temporary)
- no Super Sonic (temporary)
- extended level select (enabled by default, for now)
- new ASCII font
- internal data locations altered
- HUD redesigned
- monitors are now like Sonic 3's
- timer counts down instead of up
- ... maybe some more I forgot

Palm Tree Hill:Biogenic City:Atlantis Ruins:Pinball Palace:

Download the ROM in BIN format (825KB, zipped) here, or IPS format (347KB, zipped) here.

Comments? Suggestions? (either on the hack or how to motivate myself to work on it!)

Cheers,

xeno

Why you changed "The Chaos Theory" for "Armageddon Game"?

I'd noticed a few other hacks had "Chaos" in their title, and also noticed that the new Splinter Cell game was sub-titled "Chaos Theory". I wanted my hack to have a more unique title, and "Armageddon Game" fits the bill quite nicely happy.gif

A few years ago, when I made custom levels for Duke3D and Quake, there was a 'standard' of including a little readme file, which included details of the level. I thought it'd be a good idea to include similar information about the levels in my hack.

I'm just a little nosey! XD

Oh, and by the way, I'm completely reworking the layouts for Palm Tree Hill zone. I'm not 100% happy with the current ones, so they've gotta go! Act 2 has been extended by about a third, and moving the boss wasn't easy, but it's all done happy.gif

EDIT: The layouts have been added to Armageddon Game! Maps and screenshots have been updated on the main site, as has the version of the ROM available for download (again, zipped, in BIN and IPS formats)!

I've finished the layout of Pinball Palace (CPZ) act 1, thanks to the new version of SonED happy.gif

Check out the map here!

Download the updated ROM from the main site, and leave feedback if you feel so inclined happy.gif

Cheers,

xeno.

Keep going man. There are so few Sonic 2 Hacks that are good. Your level designs are ingenious. What ever you do, finish em' hax!

UPDATE:

I have converted this mod to utilise the Nemesis split disassembly, and have made some code tweaks here and there:

The timer is reversed again
There are varying time limits per act, similar to Sonic 1 arcade
The time bonuses are properly implemented, and go by time elapsed
Super Sonic is activate by holding UP and C, instead of simply jumping
Level Select is expanded further, as I intend to implement new zones
New monitors are implemented: Freeze/UnFreeze timer, Snorkels
Minor bugfixes in level layouts
Pinball Palace (CNZ) is being redesigned to allow 2P mode compatability
The cheatcodes are changed
Special Stages are back in
Tails and 2P mode are back in
S3 style monitors are out
... plus other stuff I can't think of at this exact moment in time =P

Needless to say, there have numerous builds and rebuilds, and the current version is 3.0.38. The old 2.0.9 version will remain the current official release for the time being, until I'm satisfied I've done enough new work to warrant a new release.

There are some minor issues that I need to correct:

HPZ is corrups in Kega, plays fine in Gens
Warp icon in act 2 of 2P zones partially overwrites the life icon
PLCs for new levels

so I will be correcting those at some point. I also intend to have a go at new art, though working with 8x8 tiles seems daunting, so I'll have to formulate a different plan of attack =P

Minor Update:

Current official release is 3.0.39 (just one revision extra from the one detailed in my above post) and was made available a week or so ago. Since then, I've privately worked up to 3.0.41, which fixes a couple of issues:

HPZ no longer corrupts in KEGA
The Warp icon no longer overwrites the life icon
The new level select cheat now works as intended

and also includes a couple of minor updates:

A couple of layout amendments here and there
PPZ act 1 is completely reworked (object placement needs some finishing touches)
I'm pratting about with adding new level IDs, mainly to see if I can actually do it
Oh yeah, 2P mode has its own levels (for now, the original Sonic 2 levels)

Now, I realise that this hack has for a long time been overshadowed by other and newer hacks, mainly due to the possibilities opened up by the split disassembly (and other people being ace at drawing art). I'm not going to try and catch up either, because at nearly 28 there are other things I really should be focusing on. This doesn't mean that I'll no longer work on this, because I will.

It can't have escaped you that for the last couple of years or so releases have been, well, a little thin on the ground. This is unlikely to ever change, but I do still enjoy having a play with AG now and again, which results in updates/fixes that make a new release worthwhile (hell, all I have to do is zip it up and upload it - hardly time-consuming!). So expect future releases, but don't expect anything ground-breaking.
